May was a hard month.
I didn’t finish Spring semester until the 25th, and I had 2 weeks of finals. So the first bit was hard. Collectively, I read 8 books this month.
Little and Lion by Brandy Colbert* Little and Lion follows Suzette (Little) and her stepbrother Lionel (Lion) as they reconnect after Little spent a year in boarding school. In her time away, Little had a relationship with a girl and is now unsure of her sexuality. Lion has also been struggling, but with mental health. Lion was diagnosed with Bipolar 2, and has been having a hard time handling it. *OWN VOICES. 4/5 stars. CONTENT WARNING: bipolar disorder, homophobia, racism, and discussed suicide
Brave Face by Shaun David Hutchinson. This is a memoir concerning SDH’s coming out experience, finding himself, struggling through mental health, etc. I really enjoyed the novel and rated it 5 stars. In light of recent events concerning the BLM movement, I am no longer supporting SDH as an author. I don’t recommend supporting this book, but if you choose to, I did really enjoy it. CONTENT WARNING: homophobia, attempted suicide, depression
A Simple Favor // Darcey Bell. This is an adult thriller novel about mommy blogger, Stephanie, and the simple favor that changed her life. A few years before, Stephanie befriended Emily, a New York business woman, who one day asks Stephanie to watch her son for the evening. No big deal. Only Emily never comes back. Now Stephanie is left to investigate what happened to her dear friend. I really liked this book, but in complete honesty, the movie adaptation was better, in my opinion. 3.5/5 stars. CONTENT WARNING: drugs and alcohol use, incest, child neglect, blackmail, discussed suicide, and muder
Through the Zombie Glass // Gena Showalter. The sequel to Alice in Zombieland, mainly focuses on Ali and Cole’s relationship and how they plan to fight the zombies. The entire first chapter was a little saucy for this to be written about 16 year olds. Also Ali spent a lot of time slut-shaming, so I removed a star. A very entertaining series, but it is a paranormal YA so…ya know. 3/5 stars. CONTENT WARNING: slut shaming, sexual content, death, grief of loss of family, kidnapping
Nevermoor // Jessica Townsend. This middlegrade fantasy follows Morrigan Crow, the unluckiest girl in town. Destined to die at midnight on her 11th birthday, she doesn’t have much hope. Until one day a strange man named Jupiter North whisks her away to the magical city of Nevermoor. In Nevermoor she is given a second chance at life, so long as she completes the Wunderous Trials and gains access to the Wunderous Society. Such a cute read! 4/5 stars. CONTENT WARNING: child neglect
The Hunger Games // Suzanne Collins. 4/5 stars.
Catching Fire // Suzanne Collins. 4.5/5 stars.
Mockingjay // Suzanne Collins. 4/5 stars.
This was my third time reading this series, so I have thoughts, but all of those will be in a seperate post later in the week. CONTENT WARNING: PTSD, murder, extortion, blackmail, bombings, discussed suicide,
