folklore book tag

AH! It’s the first post of Swiftie Sunday! ❤ I’m so excited!!!! Okay…phew let’s do it.

If you haven’t heard of folklore by now, I’m actually kind of jealous of you because it means you don’t spend every minute of the day obsessing over Taylor Swift….what’s that like?

questions

the 1- a book you wanted to read but never did

Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen. I loveee this movie, but I haven’t read the book….. oooooh did you hear that? That was the sound of millions of book lovers’ hearts breaking becuase I’ve seen the movie without reading the book.

cardigan- a character that didn’t end up with their first love interest

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell. I really hope this isn’t a spoiler, but like everyone knows that it’s basically Drarry Fanfic right? I hope? If not, I guess now you do. Carry On gets a lot of slack for being a ripoff [redacted]. It is actually a brilliant satire of the Chosen One trope …though Rainbow Rowell does have her own issues. (also I just finished reading Wayward Son so this one is just on my brain.

the last great american dynasty- a book with an epic female protagonist

With the Fire on High  by Elizabeth Acevedo. I know this question was probably intended for like a badass warrior or a fearless rebellion leader, but I went with Emoni, the epic everyday girl. She is a teen mom, has to go to class, go to work, remain in constant contact with her ex (her child’s father), and pursue her passions. SHE IS A QUEEN.

exile- a book about walking out of a toxic relationship

What I Lost by Alexandra Ballard. *** CW: disordered eating *** I am SO excited to talk about this one. I flipped the question a little, so I took it as walking out of a toxic relationship with oneself. 16- year-old Elizabeth is severley anorexic and just checked into a treatment center. This book shows her journey in the center and her process of recovery.

my tears ricochet- the fictional couple that made you suffer the most

Ali and Cole from Alice in Zombieland by Gena Showalter. I know I mention this series a lot, but I can’t help it that I’m obsessed! Ali and Cole were the biggest will-thy-won’t-they couple I’ve ever read about. Honestly these zombie salying teens own my ass and that’s okay.

mirrorball- a swoon-worthy, sweet couple

AJ and Amelia from The Storied Life of AJ Fickry by Gabrielle Zevin. AJ and Amelia are just the sweetest, happiest little couple. The perfect mix of grumpy and sunny while being incredibly realistic. 12/10 would reccomend.

seven- a book with fae characters

…… I’ve never read one….but I own The Cruel Prince by Holly Black. So I guess that?

august- a book you read very fast

Eclipse by Stephanie Meyer. Okay, so I read this for a 24-hour readathon, so saying that I read this in one day might be cheating, but I’m counting it.

this is me trying- a coming of age book

White Oleander by Janet Fitch. I actually read this for an intro to creative writing class I took last Fall, so the fact that I liked it was wild. This is an adult fiction novel following Ingrid, a young girl bouncing from foster home to foster home after her mother is sent to jail for murder.

illicit affairs- a book with a forbidden love

Cinderella is Dead by Kalynn Bayron. This book is literally everywhere and for good reason. 200 years after Cinderella’s death, the kingdom has become a breeding ground for misogyny and abuse. The women are forced into marriages they don’t want or have any say in. If they are not chosen, they are cast off and never heard from again. Sophia’s attraction to women is a definite cause for this fate in her city.

invisible string- a book featuring a road trip

An Abundance of Katherines by John Green. An oldie but a goodie! This is actually one of my favorite John Green novels (yes, I know that’s a super unpopular opinion). Brainiac Colin Singleton only ever dates girls named Katherine. After the 19th Katherine dumped him, he takes a roadtrip with his best friend to perfect a theory for predicting the outcome of any given relationship and along the way, finds the thing he’s always been looking for.

mad woman- your favorite female villain

Emily Nelson from A Simple Favor by Darcey Bell. Emily Nelson is the complex, badass, boss mom we didn’t know we needed. 12/10.

epiphany- a book that made everything disappear when you needed it

We Are the Ants  by Shaun David Hutchinson. I have mentioned this before that I no longer support SDH becuase of his response to feedback he got on his new 2020 release. Basically, one of the characters is Black and when Black reviewers criticized the way the character was written, they were blocked. Nonetheless, We Are the Ants is one of my favorite books of all time, partially because I read it at the perfect time.

betty- a book with a second chance trope

The Girl He Used to Know by Tracey Garvis Graves. This is an adult fiction novel that follows Annika, a librarian who is neurodiverse living in Chicago in 2001. This book has a dual timeline in 1991 and 2001, showing when she met Jonathan and when they reconnected. I really enjoyed this book, but I didn’t love the ending. ***CW: The ending serves as a plot twist but I didn’t love becuase it could be incredibly triggering to some so if you are interested in this book, be aware that it leads up to September 2001*** (I promise explaining the circumstance isn’t a spoiler, but I would rather spoil the circumstance than someone be hurt by my recommendation).

peace- a book with a passionate affair that wasn’t meant to be

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han. ***spoilers*** I know cannonically, Lara Jean and Peter are “meant to be.” BUT I REFUSE TO BELIEVE THAT. I’ll be the first to say that Lara Jean and John Ambrose MacClaren were endgame, not Lara Jean and Peter.

hoax- the saddest book you remember reading

I’ll Always Love You by Hans Wilhelm.  I am aware this is a child’s picture book, but YOU ARE LYING IF YOU SAY YOU DIDN’T CRYYYYYY YWHEN YOU READ THIS.

  1. I loved reading your answers! I totally agree with you on Emoni. I actually said on my review back in January that she showed me that female characters don’t need to go around slaying dragons in order to be strong, inspiring and epic.
I also hope you can read The Cruel Prince soon because it’s really great😊

    1. Oh I love that! Emoni is one of the most amazing everyday heroes I’ve read. Thank you for this awesome tag💛 — and I hope to read The Cruel Prince by the end of the year(:
